South Africa might not be your first choice for a dream holiday and whilst it is fair to say that it has had a troubled history and plenty of political upheaval it would not be fair to let this sway you from discovering what is an intensely beautiful country. One major plus for the country is that you can afford to splash out far more here than at many other destinations; safaris, shopping, expensive treats and luxury hotels South Africa lets you afford all of these.

Another draw of South Africa is that, as they work their way towards stability and prosperity they are also working incredibly hard to preserve their culture, nature and way of life so you can rest safe in the knowledge that by and large everything you are seeing, doing and getting involved in is green and benefitting the people and the country.

Of course the first thing to do would probably be to go on a safari, but you can also find golf ranges, malls and great weather. So where to start? Well the Cape Peninsular up to Cape Point and Cape Town itself are very scenic offering beaches where you might spot the odd celebrity, whale watching, nightlife, great shopping, food and wines and Table Mountain all wrapped up in a very laid back, welcoming atmosphere. Speaking of wine the country produces some award winning wines served in high class establishments worldwide and of course in the luxury hotels South Africa has. You can follow the stunning Cape wine route on tours, which also lead you through historic towns and idyllic green valleys.

Another tour to consider is the "Garden Route", which will take you through an area also known as "Africa's Eden" - loved by outdoor enthusiast and adventure seekers alike for its natural beauty and charm. Johannesburg nicknamed the "City of Gold" also offers freedom tours, entertainment, shopping and fine dining, but if you want to get out and get up close and personal with the wildlife then Kruger National Park is definitely top of the list. This is probably the most famous of Africa's Parks and with good reason. Spanning almost 2 million hectares and supporting 16 ecosystems there are a variety of safari options including the traditional 4x4 and a walking safari for the brave.

Perhaps you don't associate South Africa with sun bathing and water sports, but Durban beachfront is actually a very family oriented place. Also known as the sunshine City and offering surfing, a marine park and golden beaches there is something for everyone who has children of any age to entertain and keep busy.

Rather than shy away from its turbulent past South Africa seeks to celebrate it and learn from it. Nowhere is this more apparent than at Robben Island where it's most famous prisoner Nelson Mandela has transformed this brutal institution and symbol of oppression and fear into an icon celebrating the triumph of human spirit over adversity and enormous hardship. Similarly Soweto, once a seething mass of anti-apartheid activity is being revamped and you can visit "Freedom Struggle Sites" there.

If you haven't had enough of the views and sights so far then head over to Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve where you can hike or take a relaxing, scenic drive. If you like to combine the rough outdoors with fine things and luxury hotels South Africa gives you the Wild Coast with its untamed, rugged coastlines, deserted beaches, horse riding, hiking trails and dolphins spotting nestled into which are golf courses and luxury hotels and all are draped with its mystical history and Xhosa heritage.

South Africa is proud of its heritage and offers some unique "experience packages", which give you a chance to experience real and inspiring cultural interaction. You can spend a week in a Xhosa household, escape to a typical South African farm or even spend a day in a Zulu village!

So whilst the country could have allowed its past to drag it down it has used it to not only rebuild and revitalize, but also to give real hope and resolve to its people and for its future. So if you are looking to be inspired then why not give South Africa some serious thought?
